A 5-Week Course to Master Archery

A program provided through a partnership between Bloomington Community Education and the City of Bloomington Parks & Recreation

This 5-week course is designed to introduce young archers to the fundamentals of archery, following the guidelines of the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP). Participants will learn proper shooting techniques, safety protocols, and scoring methods. The course culminates in a 10-yard competition, adhering to standard NASP rules.

Course Outline:

Week 1: Introduction and First Shots

• Parent Orientation (first 15 minutes): A brief overview of the NASP program, safety guidelines, and expectations.
• NASP Overview: Introduction to the NASP program, its mission, and values.
• Basic Archery Techniques: Learn the fundamental steps of drawing, aiming, and releasing an arrow.
• Equipment Familiarization: Introduction to archery equipment, including bows, arrows, and safety gear.
• First Shots: Guided practice sessions to develop muscle memory and proper form.
• Binder Distribution: Participants receive a course binder containing essential information and practice sheets.

Weeks 2-4: Mastering the Fundamentals

• In-depth Technique Analysis: Detailed breakdown of each step of the shooting process:

  • Nock Point
  • Draw
  • Anchor Point
  • Aim
  • Release
  • Follow-through
• Practice Drills: Targeted practice to improve accuracy and consistency.
• Scoring and Competition Preparation:
  • Introduction to NASP scoring rules and procedures.
  • Practice rounds simulating competition conditions.
  • Mental preparation techniques for competition.

Week 5: Competition

• 10-Yard Competition: Participants compete in a 10-yard archery tournament, adhering to NASP standards.
• Post-Competition Analysis: Review of performance and identification of areas for improvement.
• Awards Ceremony: Recognition of top performers and participation certificates for all.
